FELICITY SIDWELL
Her artistic journey has gone from oils to many years as a watercolorist, she now paints almost exclusively in oils, preferring to work outside to capture the colors and light of the landscape. In Felicity’s words, “I am fascinated by changing light and our perception of moods of sea, sky and the land around us. Color is reflected light, light and color nuances are constantly changing with the time of day, weather and changing seasons. The muted colors of a humid day, the energy of the brightness of sky over water on a clear, windy day giving sharp contrasts to the rocky shoreline, the peaceful golden light of fall grasses in the salt marsh, and the shapes and colors of the frozen bay in winter. Light is different every day. In my paintings I strive to share the joy I feel when immersed in the natural world untouched by human intervention. Yes we are a part of this world and like the ocean we make our presence felt by the changes we make to the environment, but it is the sense of exhilaration in a storm, the contented love of a summer beach or the peace of an autumn salt marsh that I long to share with others away from the buildings and the trappings of modern society. Fishing villages of caostal Maine and small family farms, seem to me part of an older, more natural order that fit into the environment with a beauty of their own.
A long standing member of the Plein Air Painters of Maine (PAPM), I paint outside, “en plein air” as much as possible to capture and express in paint the fleeting colors of land and sky that are so dependent on the atmospheric conditions of the day and the season of the year. My goal is to convey through plein air and studio work, the relationship of light and color to what we perceive and feel about a scene.” In August of 2016, Felicity moved to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to be near her grandchildren and to begin a new chapter in her life painting the farmlands and forested hills in the area which are reminiscent of the landscape in Hertfordshire, England. Her paintings are exhibited nationally and held in numerous private and corporate collections. She is a member of the Plein Air Painters of Maine; The Foundry Art Market, Chambersburg, PA; Hanover Area Arts Guild Plein Air Painters, PA; CALC, Carlisle PA; Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters; Adams County Arts Council; American Impressionist Society; and Oil Painters of America. Felicity Sidwell’s art journey has been one of constant exploration, study, evolution and growth. She grew up in England and started painting when she moved to the United States with her husband in 1971.
