Stephen Godsoe

Stephen Godsoe is an award-winning educator and multi-talented fine artist with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master of Arts Degree in Mathematics and Technology all from the University of Maine.

A twelfth generation Mainer, Stephen comes from a family of artists including his father who was a well-known bird carver. His first Maine ancestor was a surveyor who created maps in the 1700’s with with hand drawn symbols and structures.

Primarily self-taught, Steve’s paintings depict a range of scenes across multiple genres including landscapes and portraits. Working with a variety of mediums his portfolio includes exquisitely detailed realistic paintings of people and places, and expressionistic semi-abstract paintings full of vibrant colors and rich tones.

Throughout his career as an educator Steve always found time to paint. “My early paintings and one-man shows in Washington, DC included many large detailed paintings of indigenous people and architectural structures found in Brazil where my wife and I lived in the early 1970’s.

Recently, I’m painting with acrylics and creating more freely done landscapes. Portraits of birds are always in my portfolio, I share my father’s love of Maine’s birds and have painted and studied them throughout my life.”

After forty-nine years of teaching mathematics in Massachusetts, Maine, and Brazil Steve retired to Portland, Maine where he continues to paint and draw inspiration from the natural beauty of Maine. Steve’s paintings are held in private collections around the globe.
