July 2012 – “CREATURES and CRITTERS”For Immediate Release (Peaks Island, ME) “Creatures and Critters”, a new exhibit at Richard Boyd Art Gallery opens July 2nd at 10:00 am. The exhibit features a collection of works which show the reverence man has for animals, our connection to them and the way we use them as symbols for human emotions. Whether you like traditional or contemporary art, vivid colors or soft pastels this multi-media exhibit is for art lovers of all ages. Paintings and sculptures depicting creatures and critters of all sizes fill the front gallery. Works by Thomas Dowling, Pam Cabanas, Judy O’Donnell, Tina-Marie Poulin and Jean Noon are on view daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm through July 29th. The diversity of the exhibit is evident upon entering the gallery where Thomas Dowling’s sculptures engage your imagination. A graduate of the Maine College of Art with a Degree in Illustration, Thomas discovered his love of sculpture in his senior year. Dowling’s work is inspired by ancient myths and modern folklore. Pam Cabanas, an artist, entrepreneur and educator for over forty years, is well known for her paintings in soft pastels which express her reverence for the Maine coast and all who live there. Pam’s inspiration comes from the harsh yet beautiful coast of Maine, which has given her an environment full of inspiration, rich in history and beauty. Judy O’Donnell’s brightly colored paintings aspire to show harmony between life forms in nature and man. An artist and sculptor for over thirty years, O’Donnell’s paintings start with an emotional apex. Judy’s current body of work explores animal spirits and symbolism and often depicts animals under stress due to changes in the environment caused by man. Tina-Marie Poulin a Barnard graduate from Skowhegan, ME., and internationally ranked snowshoe athlete, creates drawings in vivid colors inspired by the 1960’s Op Art movement. Tina-Marie’s drawings depict small creatures living in a kaleidoscope of colors. When not working in her studio in South Portland, ME., Poulin can be found at her desk in New York City, where she works for Christie’s International or preparing for a snowshoe competition. Jean Noon, an artist, sculptor and farmer, has a B.A., in Art/Education and Agriculture from Goddard College and a B.S., in Art Education from the University of Southern Maine. The owner of a farm in Southern Maine, Jean has a deep connection to the land and the animals that call it home. Noon’s abstract wire horse sculpture was inspired by her love of horses. Most of Jean’s current works include recycled materials and shifts between figurative, non-objective, minimalist and complex forms. Richard Boyd Art Gallery is located on Peaks Island, ME at the corner of Island Avenue and Epps Street, first building on the right. The gallery exhibits original 20th and 21st century works of art by established and emerging artists with ties to Maine, working primarily in the media of painting, sculpture, pottery and glass. An art studio producing hand made original works of art with a focus on ceramic art and pottery is located on the second floor. The gallery is open 10:00 am through 5:00 pm daily from May through September. Additional hours are by appointment or chance. The gallery is open to 8:00 pm the first Friday of each month.
