As a child of the 50’s I watched the building of the interstate highways and followed their lines around many a bend. What can be said about this road trip through life? As unique as each day has been it has also followed the pattern of humanity. For over 30 years the trip has been shared with my spouse. This man and our children and friends are some of the biggest surprises of my life. I am humbled by their acceptance and love.

My painting style is born out of my experiences. The bold colors of the sixties have mellowed and blended with the background, along with the sometimes humorous, sometimes dark pen and inks left along the road. A year at Montserrat School of Visual Art, many sketchbooks and canvases, the commercial art jobs I was fortunate to have, and especially the doodling and dreaming of challenging times, are part of the palette of my life.

I have an unstructured approach to art and life that has served me well. In stead of earning a formal education I gathered my brushes and toured Europe in a micro-bus, painting and learning as I went. Life has been a creative, do-it-yourself adventure for me. Through my life I have embraced my creativity, and painting specifically. I love painting and I love sharing my work!

Since 2000, I have enjoyed living in Damariscotta, Maine. Though the place is beautiful I know that much of my contentment comes from the inner journey I have been on. Painting has been a consistent part of my life. Art helps ground my attention to my reality and helps me to process how I feel about it. Often I recognize classic themes and honor them with a traditional painting style.

The intertidal rocks and islands of Maine’s coast are the subjects of my current series of paintings, which I travel by skiff to reach. It is in this setting that I respond to the expansive space, sky and sea with acrylic paint on canvas. The weather and time of day vary the scenes with color, light and mood.

Although most of my paintings are created en plein air, the large canvases are created in my Damariscotta studio using photographs and the paintings done on location as references.
