June 2014 – Jane Herbert a Solo Exhibition of Paintings
“August on the Water” ~ by Jane Herbert
(Portland, ME) Richard Boyd Art Gallery announces the opening of a solo exhibition of paintings in acrylic by mid-coast Maine artist Jane Herbert on Sunday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m. Jane grew up in New Jersey and in her words, “the alternative beat of the sixties appealed to me and I went along for the ride with my art supplies to chronicle the adventures. I managed a year of art school in the seventies (Montserrat School of Visual Art) but yielded to the siren call of driving and painting across Europe in a VW Bus. My painting style is born out of my experiences. The bold colors of the sixties have mellowed and blended with the background, along with the sometimes humorous, sometimes dark pen and inks left along the road. The sketchbooks, the commercial art jobs I was fortunate to have, and especially the doodling and dreaming of challenging times, are part of the palette of my life.
After moving to Maine in 2000, I found the natural beauty of the coast speaking to me on a deeply personal level as I explored the wilderness of the tidal islands where the rocks meet the vastness of the ocean and the sky goes on forever. A serene co-mingling of the awe and groundedness I now feel is a result of those explorations and the foundation of my recent work. My intimate relationship with the reassuring majesty of nature not only inspires but also heals. For me, art is a tool of alchemy healing through expressive action which can, at its best, resonate with the interpretive participation of the witness. My personal focus as a painter is on a positive, energizing spirit as it manifests in our world today.”
The exhibit is on view view of charge to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily through June 30, 2014. Jane will be at an artist reception at Richard Boyd Art Gallery on Saturday, June 7 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm to discuss her recent series of paintings. The gallery is located on Peaks Island, ME at the corner of Island Aveune and Epps Street, in the first building on the right, on the first floor.
