March 2015 – “It’s Not So Balck and White” Annual Exhibit
(Portland, ME) Richard Boyd Art Gallery located on Peaks Island in Portland, Maine opens the month of March with an annual exhibition of art works in black and white. Although color is evident in some of the works this year, the focus remains on the creation of art using minimal color to create shading and variations in tone, lighting, and contrast. The exhibit features paintings by artists Amy Bickford and KellyUfkin and a selection of additional works by gallery artists in a range of styles and variety of mediums. The exhibit is on view through March 29, 2015.
Amy Bickford ~ ‘Horse Study’ ~ Watercolor Pencil 9″ x 11.5″
Artist Amy Bickford’s paintings in acrylic based gouache and watercolor depict a broad range of subjects including seascapes, landscapes, and animal portraits. A graduate of the Maine College of Art, Amy has lived in the Portland area since 1979. She has worked as an interior painter, muralist, and most recently as administrative support for a mental health agency’s crisis team. Over the years she has had her hands in many different forms of the arts, painting murals for the Children’s Museum of Art, recreating the artwork on the ceiling of the St. John’s Cathedral in Bangor, as well as painting commission portraits and works for clients across the United States.
Kelly Ufkin ~ ‘Congress Square’ ~ 18″ x 24″
Portland, Maine artist, Kelly Ufkin is a graduate of Marywood University in Pennsylvania, where she earned a BFA in Art Therapy with a minor in Psychology, followed by a Master in Fine Arts in painting in 2012. Kelly’s current portfolio of paintings contain elevated complexities with composition, lighting, and contrast. In Kelly’s words, “the main focus is the distortion of images within water that converses with the concrete physicality of its surroundings. Rather than being inclusive of the standard formula of distribution between sky and land, I prefer to mostly deny the sky to allow water to be the primary element.”
Kelly Ufkin ~ ‘1915 Fisherman’ ~ Oil on Canvas 16″ x 24″
