(Portland, ME) Richard Boyd Art Gallery announces the opening of “Intersections” on Friday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m.  The exhibit features a selection of contemporary paintings in watercolor by award winning artist Katharine A. Cartwright, NWS. The exhibition is on view free to the public from 10:00am to 3:00 pm every, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through March 30, 2014.

As a young child, Katharine’s mother encouraged her to experiment with color theory and design. Both her parents provided her with a formal education in the fine arts. Cartwright’s father, an electronic and radio engineer sparked her interest in science at an early age. This early influence and education strengthened her intuition-based analytical thinking skills and set her on a dual discipline course for the rest of her life. Her present body of work, ‘The Laws of Nature’, an ongoing series of paintings in watercolor, melds these two disciplines. Each work in the series “provides an aesthetic interpretation of an individual physical law.”(Peaks Island, ME) Richard Boyd Art Gallery announces the opening of  ‘Intersections’ on Friday, March 7 at 10:00 am. The exhibit features a selection of 12 contemporary paintings in watercolor by nationally recognized artist and art instructor Katharine Cartwright. Katharine’s paintings are at the intersection of the visual arts and the natural sciences.

In the fine arts, Cartwright received formal academic training from Kutztown University, The College of Charleston, and The Maryland Institute College of Art. This training enabled her to master drawing and techiniques in oil painting. A few decades later, she gained interest in watercolor painting and attended workshops by Janet Fish, Christopher Schink, and Susan Webb Tregay. By the age of forty, Katharine’s interest in the natural physical world inspired her to return to college where she was awarded a B.A., magna cum laude, in Geology from the College of Charleston followed by a M.S. with honors in Earth Sciences from Syracuse University. While continuing her work as a professional artist, she also served as Lecturer in the Department of Earth Sciences at Skidmore College and acted as department chair before retiring in 2008. Presently, Cartwright works from her studio in Spruce Head, ME.
